Welcome to the Practice of Dr. Andrea Kim, Adult Psychiatrist and Telepsychiatry Provider Serving Dallas, Plano & Richardson, Texas

Suspecting you or a loved one has mental illness is a scary, anxious time. There are more questions than answers. You may be wondering the following: What does mental illness mean? What does my future look like? What about my goals and dreams? How can I get better? How will this impact my relationships with loved ones? What about my children, if I have any? Will they have mental illness, too?

Although there is much uncertainty, you do not have to be alone in this process. There are trained professionals to help walk with you through this, in many different, but important, aspects. Psychologists, therapists, social workers, testing and assessment professionals all make invaluable contributions toward bettering your understanding of your situation and providing guidance for the present and the future.

To approach mental illness in a holistic manner, we cannot attribute all causes to one’s upbringing, one’s current relationships, one’s past relationships, one’s way of approaching life, stressful life events, etc, although all of these things can contribute in their own way. Similarly, the brain cannot be ignored as a contributor to mental illness. The mind/brain is a very complicated organ, and is probably the least well-understood organ in the human body. Some call it the “final frontier of science.” Even President Obama in April 2013 called on Congress to spend $100 million to study the brain more fully. It seems that the more we study the brain, the more we see how little we know. It is a brilliantly complex system.

About Dr. Kim

Psychiatrists are trained physicians who specialize in the mind/brain, the normal and abnormal in human behavior, and in mental illnesses.  The training process is 4 years of medical school and 4 years of residency, before one can call themselves a psychiatrist.  A board-certified psychiatrist is one who also took rigorous exams by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.  A good psychiatrist will listen to not just your symptoms but your story, who you are and what makes you unique.  No two people are the same, even if they have the same psychiatric diagnosis.  Things that will help symptoms in one person may not help the second one, because each person is unique.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist in Dallas, TX.  I look forward to meeting you and hearing your story, and together working on an individualized approach to helping you feel better, mentally and physically, and meet your goals.  I believe in a team approach:  while I may make recommendations, you are the one who has to ultimately believe in and implement the treatment plan.  Together, we can make progress and change in your life.
